The Rotary Club of Alliston’s
Proposed
Tsunami Relief Project in Thailand
Rationale
Tsunami relief projects are of two types; immediate relief in which we
participated in in January 2005, and the longer range projects that Rotary
International favours. This committee has recognized the need for
longer-range projects in line with the aims of Rotary International.
As a result, we are working towards a project in
Thailand. This choice will allow us to be in constant contact with our Thai Rotary
Club partner via Punnapa Hartley and her mother’s Rotary Club in Thailand
.
The
Project
The Tsunami Project search committee will be finding a needy village in
the Pukhet region of Thailand. The committee’s plan is to adopt a village for a period of up to ten
years. In that time, the Rotary Club of Alliston and it’s partners will
be involved in projects involving areas of need such as schools, nursing
stations, hospital etc. This is a potential “Sweat Equity” project.
Choosing
the appropriate project
Rotarian Punnapa travelled to Thailand
for a week to investigate first-hand villages that have been
affected and has reported back to the Rotary Club of Alliston. The first
project will come from this trip.
Commencement
of Project
It is proposed that the project will able to be submitted to RI in
July 2006 and to commence sometime after November 1, 2006
.
Fund-raising
There are numerous fund-raising options which are being reviewed by the
club. Our
first event will be a Thai Gala Dinner.

Tsunami
Project –
Thailand
The
Project
·
To adopt a (fishing) village in the Phuket region of
Thailand
·
A project that will extend over a number of
years
·
A “Stand – Alone” project in that it will have its own
dedicated fund-raising that will not detract from other club fund-raising
projects
There is a possibility of this being a site for a Sweat Equity project
