Club Charter

Our Rotary club was sponsored by the Beeton and Bradford clubs with strong support from the (downtown) Toronto club. We began  meeting in September 1954 in a church basement which was the Women's Institute Hall. By the time we celebrated our charter night, February 11, 1955 we were 22 strong and well versed in the traditions and meaning of Rotary. Les Cook, one of our charter members, is still an active member today.

Our first big project was raising money (in total $100 00) to create an outdoor pool for the town. After much blood, sweat and yes, tears, we turned the water on in the summer of 1956. It took many hours each spring to prepare the pool for opening and in 1960 we turned it over to the town. Hundreds of children each summer still learn to swim in "The Rotary Pool"!

We thank those members who started the fine tradition of "Service Above Self" in Alliston.
