Over the past two years, Rotary member Felix Kachaele has paid a weekly visit to the Banting Robotics Club, an after-hours robot-building workshop that gives a group of Banting Memorial High School students some real-world practical experience in STEM applications.  Led by teacher Brian Haas, the students have produced several tournament-winning robotic machines in recent years.  “Every piece they create is custom-designed and built from scratch,” noted Felix.

With his technical background, Felix plays a valuable role in guiding the students’ software programming efforts.  “Robots are very complex mathematically,” explained Felix.  “For example, there’s a drive base for forward motion and a separate swerve base for lateral movement.”

The 2023-2024 Banting team is looking forward to two district competitions in March – Newmarket and McMaster University.  The districts lead to a regional qualifier and, for the winners, a chance to compete in the World Championships in Texas later this year.

Rotary has been a financial donor to the Robotics club but mentorship is a new level of involvement.  We applaud Felix’s personal efforts in making a difference for the youth of our community.
